Hi, I’m Andrew Herwig
Business Coach & Financial Strategist
and founder of Spend With Clarity.
I work with thoughtful people who want to understand what’s really happening, make better decisions, and turn good strategy into sustained progress.
For business owners, that often means cash flow, profitability, pricing, hiring, growth, or figuring out which problem deserves attention next.
For individuals and families, it means building a financial life that reflects what actually matters to them.
Different questions. Same underlying work:
Get clear. Decide intentionally. Build the systems to follow through.
I Didn’t Set Out to
Become a Financial Coach.
I always suspected I’d build something of my own.
I just didn’t have “the idea” yet.
So instead of forcing one, I worked.
I started as a teacher and track-and-field coach at a boarding school. What I loved most was the one-on-one work: understanding someone, seeing what they were capable of, and helping them make progress they might not have reached alone.
Later, moving into school administration taught me something different. Sometimes the problem isn’t the person — it’s the system around them. I became increasingly interested in changing structures rather than simply helping people navigate around them.
Then I became Director of Operations for a premium cycling-event business. That was my education in small-business reality: cash flow, operations, pricing, staffing, growth, and what happens when a great product isn’t supported by equally strong business fundamentals.
At the same time, I was going deeper into personal finance — learning YNAB, reading widely, experimenting with different frameworks, and becoming increasingly fascinated by the gap between knowing what to do with money and actually building a life around it.
Eventually, the pieces started fitting together.
I was approaching 30. We had a newborn at home. The road ahead in my existing job was becoming clearer.
I knew I could go find another conventional job.
Instead, I decided it was time to bet on myself.
Spend With Clarity became the intersection of everything I’d learned to value most: coaching, strategy, financial thinking, systems, and long-term partnership.
What I Believe
Context comes before prescription.
Frameworks are useful. Generic advice is only useful when you understand the principles underneath it and apply them thoughtfully to the person or business in front of you.
Systems should serve the goal.
The point isn’t to build the prettiest spreadsheet, hit somebody else’s ideal percentages, or follow a system perfectly.
The system exists to help you make better decisions.
Implementation matters more than insight.
Knowing the answer is rarely the hardest part.
The real work is acting on it, learning what happens, adjusting, and staying focused long enough for meaningful change to take hold.
Growth doesn’t eliminate problems. It earns better ones.
There will always be another decision, constraint, or opportunity.
The goal is to get increasingly good at identifying which problems are worth solving — and increasingly capable of solving them well.
Money should support the life you’re building.
That applies whether we’re talking about a household or a company.
More money isn’t automatically better. The question is what that money makes possible.
The Kind of Partnership
I’m Building
I don’t want to be the person who hands you a recommendation and disappears.
I want to understand what you’re trying to build, help you identify what matters most now, develop the strategy with you, and stay involved while reality inevitably changes the plan.
That might mean we work intensely together for five sessions and you’re ready to run with it.
Or it might become a coaching relationship that lasts for years because the questions keep evolving.
Either outcome is good.
The goal isn’t dependence.
It’s helping you become increasingly confident in your ability to understand what’s happening, make good decisions, and keep moving forward.
Experience & Frameworks
YNAB Certified Coach — forward-looking cash-flow planning and financial behavior
Profit First principles — business cash flow, allocation, profitability, and financial structure
Small-business operations — pricing, hiring, capacity, offers, client journey, and growth strategy
Personal finance coaching — spending, saving, debt, major decisions, and long-term planning
Teacher, athletic coach & operations leader — more than a decade spent helping people understand complex problems and turn plans into action
I use tools and frameworks when they’re useful. None of them gets to override the context of your actual situation.
Outside of Coaching
I live in Libertyville, Illinois with my wife, our two young kids, and our dog.
When I’m not coaching, there’s a good chance I’m playing with my kids, racing a bicycle, making coffee, talking to neighbors, working on a project around the house, or figuring out whatever new problem family life has handed us that week.
I care a lot about building a business that supports a meaningful life — because that’s exactly what I’m trying to do myself.
Let’s Figure out
What Matters Next.
Bring the question, decision, or challenge that’s been taking up space in your head.
We’ll talk through where things stand, what you’re trying to accomplish, and whether coaching together feels like a good fit.
